Adult Education At Raritan Yacht Club

The RYC Education Committee is pleased to offer multiple sail training options for many levels of sailing experience, ages youth through adult. Programs are available for those who have never been in a boat, those with some experience and wish to improve their skills and those who wish to compete in sailboat racing.

RYC Adult Introduction to Sailing Program

This annual, one-day Introduction to Sailing Course is designed for those who have thought about sailing but have not become involved in the sport. The Introduction to Sailing Program is a great way to experience the exhilarating sport of sailing on beautiful Raritan Bay.

In years past, the presenters have been well-known sailing professionals or RYC club members, and sometimes the presenter is an RYC club member with an international sailing reputation.

RYC Adult Sailing Lessons

Raritan Yacht Club is happy to announce the availability of both private, semi-private, and group sailing lessons for adults. These lessons are meant to address the requests from less experienced sailors looking to enhance their confidence.

Sailing instruction will be specific to the needs of the student and can range from basic sailing instruction to fine tuning racing skills. Lessons can be taught on any of the club boats (YY-15's, 420's, or the Colgate 26's) or on the student's privately owned boat.

Lessons are open to both club members and non-members. All instruction must take place at Raritan Yacht Club and can be scheduled through our main office at 732-826-2277.

  • Adult Introduction to Sailing 2016
    • Sunday, May 22nd, 2016 and Sunday, June 5th 2016

      Class Begins at 8:30am

If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to sail, then join the RYC Adult Introduction to Sailing program. Now in seventh year, this is a wonderful community outreach program to offer a day of sailing instruction and on-water training to people of the surrounding towns and cities.

Participants may register by e-mail or in person at the Raritan Yacht Club. Admission to the program is free, and we only ask – primarily due to timing constraints – that participants buy their lunch at our club galley for a nominal fee.
Once registered, the program begins with knowledge club members conducting classroom instruction in the areas of Sailing Theory, Sailing Terminology, Sail Handling & Trimming, Knot Tying, Elementary Navigation and Boat Safety.
There are hands on opportunities during the classroom session and opportunities to ask questions. Participants will then be assigned to various sailboats skippered by volunteer club members. After eating lunch with their skipper and fellow crewmembers, participants will spend about three to four hours sailing on the Raritan Bay, practicing the real-life application of what they learned in the classroom.

The event wraps up with a post-sailing activity on the club deck and opportunity to interact with RYC members. Those interested in club membership and/or information on the club’s fractional sailboerat program, can have their questions answered, and applications will be available.
