Mooring Number Conversions

Convert Prefix to Latitude | Convert Number to Longitude | Examples

The mooring numbers in the RYC field represent the latitude and longitude to specify the location of the mooring. As the letters increase, position in the fleet moves southward towards the train bridge. After "Z" the next moorings are 2A, 2B, 2C, etc. Our most eastern mooring is 1 and as numbers increase, the position moves westward.

You can use the conversion tables below to determine your mooring's Latitude and Longitude. To do that, first separate you Mooring Number into a prefix and number. The prefix is the leading letter or number and letter. Look up the prefix in the latitude table and the number in the longitude table.

Keep in mind that our fleet chart is in minutes and seconds, not tenths of minutes. You may need to convert. For your GPS settings, divide the seconds by 60 or use the tables' Min.dd columns.

Examples:
  1. Suppose your mooring number is J9, looking up J in the Convert Prefix to Latitude table, gives you 40 hrs north 30 min 08 sec; looking up 9, in the Convert Number to Longitude table, gives 9= 074 hrs west 15 min 45 sec.
    Hence your mornings position is N 40° 30'08", W 074° 15'45" West

  2. For 2B26, looking up 2B gives 40 hrs, 29 min 50 sec and 26 gives 074 hrs 16 min 03 sec, which yields N 40° 29'50", W 074° 16'03".
